2009 Hall Vineyards Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc

91 points Wine Enthusiast/ 93 Points from Wilfred Wong ( Bevmo Critic) : "A very fine 100% Sauvignon Blanc, made with little or no oak influence. It¡¯s dry and crisp and attractive, with citrus and tropical fruit, honeysuckle and vanilla flavors, and a fine tug of minerals. Combines richness and power with elegance, a rare feat." (12/10) This sprightly Sauvignon Blanc balances impressively ripe fruit with bright, buoyant acidity. The backbone of this lusty blend hails from a vineyard partner in the cool region of Yountville and delivers ripe vibrant citrus flavors. A wine made for seafood.

Sauvignon blanc is a green-skinned grape variety which originates from the Bordeaux region of France.
The Sauvignon blanc grape traces its origins to western France in the Loire Valley and Bordeaux Regions. The grape most likely gets its name from the French word sauvage ("wild") and blanc ("white") due to its early origins as an indigenous grape in South West France.,[1] a possible descendant of savagnin. Sauvignon blanc is planted in many of the world's wine regions, producing a crisp, dry, and refreshing white varietal wine. The grape is also a component of the famous dessert wines from Sauternes and Barsac. Sauvignon blanc is widely cultivated in France, Chile, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Brazil, Moldova and California. Some California Sauvignon blancs are also called "Fume Blanc," though this is often perceived to be a different type of wine.

Depending on the climate, the flavor can range from aggressively grassy to sweetly tropical. Wine experts have used the phrase "crisp, elegant, and fresh" as a favorable description of Sauvignon blanc from the Loire Valley and New Zealand.[2][3] Sauvignon blanc, when slightly chilled, pairs well with fish or cheese, particularly Chèvre. It is also known as one of the few wines that can pair well with sushi.[4]  The wine is usually consumed young, as it does not particularly benefit from aging,

Condes de Albarei  Albariño 2010

Winery: Condes de Albarei

Region: DO Rias Baixas (Spain)

Type of Wine: White Wine

Aging & Type of Oak:No oaked

Annual Production (in bottles): 1,000,000

Awards & Recognition:
International Wine Challenge 2011, Silver.

Tasting Note

Albariño¡¯s many facets seem to arise both from the subregion in Rías Baixas where the grapes are grown and from the winemakers¡¯ decisions, especially to utilize (or not) lees in contact with the wine. Albarei offers a clean, citrusy, mineral-laden version of the grape, reflective of the cool and wet Val do Salnés sub region. It's ideal for all kinds of shellfish, among other foods. Drink now or over the next several years.

Wine Description

The character of the wine is expressed entirely in this wine, where fruit is the predominant note. Grapes have been respectfully cared for in all steps of winemaking. After careful grape selection at harvest in the vineyard, the grapes are transported to the winery in small plastic crates. After a delicate extraction and settling of the grape juice, a long fermentation is made at a low temperature.

About the Winery

Founded in 1988, Condes de Albarei was born as a humble initiative by a small group of grape growers today it stands as one of the most important wineries of DO Rías Baixas with more than 740 acres of vineyards to make a wide range of high-quality wines. In 2008 Adega Condes de Albarei purchased Pazo Baión, a spectacular property whose origin goes back to the fifteenth century with 54 acres of Albariño grape vines—the biggest vineyard from Salnes Valley. The winery has launched an ambitious enoturism project and has just opened its doors for wine tours and tastings.

Albariño

By far the finest white grape variety, Albariño accounts for 90% of all plantings in the Rίas Baixas (ree-ahs-buy-shuss) region of Spain. Rías Baixas —and more precisely its sub-zone Val do Salnés—is the birthplace of Albariño. One origin theory—romantic but untrue—is that Albariño is derived from Riesling, brought by German pilgrims on the path to Santiago de Compostela, a holy city in Galicia. Another theory is that the Cistercian monks from Burgundy, who established vineyards wherever they built their churches, introduced it in the 12th or 13th century.

Whatever the origin, there is no dispute in terms of the quality and unique flavor profile of Albariño wines. It has been compared to Riesling for its minerality and bracing acidity to Viognier, because of its fleshiness and peach/apricot character and to Pinot Gris for its floral bouquet. When grown in highly acidic, granitic earth, Albariño yields a more mineral-driven and structured wine. In sandy soil, however, the Albariño grape gives a softer, rounder wine.

A small, green, thick-skinned variety, the grape resists fungal disease in the particularly damp climate of Rίas Baixas. Albariño is a low yielding variety and expensive to cultivate. It is also one of the few Spanish white grape varieties produced as a varietal wine on its own and designated on labels. Most often fermented in stainless steel for early drinking, Albariño is a versatile grape. It responds well to malolactic or barrel fermentation and maturation to create wines of wonderful complexity and aging ability.

While Rίas Baixas is the birthplace of Albariño, it is also extensively grown in the Vinho Verde region of Portugal and can be found to a lesser extent in both Australia and the United States of America.

MACHI 2012 , Torrontes

93 PTS. WILFRED WONG. Incredible standout in the world of wines, the measurably fine '12 Machi Torrontes zings the palate bright mineral and dried citrus flavors super finish.

The Torrontes grape is cultivated in the Argentine provinces of Catamarca, La Rioja, Mendoza, Salta, San Juan and Rio Negro. The Torrontes wine made from this white grape is considered the best of its kind in the entire world.

Torrontes is the most distinctive of all Argentine wines, including both white and red, because Argentina is the only country to produce it. It is considered a wholly Argentine variety.

Tasting Notes/Food Pairing Suggestions

"Enticing aromas that are strikingly similar to Viognier, with hints of peach pit, flowers, and orange citrus fruit. On the
palate, it has a beautiful structure and acidity along with enticing fruit flavors that keep you coming back for another sip and plenty of body for a wine that shows such delicate aromas and flavors. Fruity, floral and yet still quite dry, this wine has to be tasted to be believed. Best enjoyed in its youth either by itself, or as a wonderful partner with smoked meats, mild to medium-strong cheeses, and seafood. Great partner for spicy food and Thai as well."
