비슷한 뜻을 가진 표현이 여러가지 있지만 그 중에 DUE TO가 너무 쉽게 잘못 사용되고 있습니다. 미국사람들 사이에서도요.
서로 잘못 사용하다보니 다들 거기에 익숙해져서 다들 같이 잘못 사용하면서도 맞는 줄 알고.
기사에서도 잘못 사용되고, 보통 이메일 같은데서도 잘못 사용되고, 일반 대화는 물론이고...
그러다가 제가 한 번은 같이 일하던 통역하시는 분이 잘못 사용하는 것을 들었는데,
짜증이 확! 났습니다.
그런데 짜증이 나면서도 생각해보면 저도 똑같습니다. 하도 여기저기서 잘못 사용하고 있으니 그렇게 듣던게 너무 익숙해졌나봅니다.
때로는 저도 제가 그렇게 말을 해 놓고... 분위기상 그냥 넘어가버립니다. -__-
솔직히 다들 잘못 사용하니 누가 맞게 사용하는지, 잘못 사용하는지도 모르겠지만,
...그래도 제대로 알고 있고, 올바르게 사용하는게 좋지 않을까요?

DUE TO
이전 글에 말씀드렸듯이 DUE TO는 adjective입니다. adjective는 noun을 modify합니다.
예를 들자면...
The situation was not handled properly because our President was a fool.
대통령이 바보였기 때문에 상황이 제대로 다루어지지 않았다.
이 말을 바꿔볼까요?
The situation was not handled properly because of our President's foolishness. (o)
The situation was not handled properly due to our President being a fool. (x)
The situation was not handled properly due to our President's foolishness. (x)
The mishandling of the situation was due to our President's foolishness. (o)
마지막 문장이 맞는 이유는...
DUE TO가 들어갔기 때문에 NOUN이 있어야 하기 때문입니다.
"due to our President's foolishness" = "대통령의 어리석음으로 인한"이 modify하는 noun이 있어야 하기 때문입니다.
그리고 이 문장에서 "due to our President's foolishness" = "대통령의 어리석음으로 인한"이 modify하는 noun은 "the mishandling of the situation" = "상황의 잘못된 처리(?)"이기 때문입니다.
The mishandling of the situation was due to our President's foolishness.
NOUN1 WAS DUE TO NOUN2.
더 쉽게 생각해보려면,
(RESULT) WAS DUE TO (CAUSE).
(RESULT) 와 (CAUSE), 즉 (결과) 와 (원인), 또한 NOUN 입니다.
하나 더 예를 들겠습니다.
Nancy felt fatigued all the time because she had an incurable illness.
고칠 수 없는 병이 있었기 때문에 낸시는 언제나 피곤해 했다.
이 문장을 "낸시의 끊임없는 피로는 그녀가 가지고 있는, 고칠 수 없는 병으로 인한 것이다"라고 DUE TO를 넣어서 바꾸려면 어떻게 할까요?
NOUN1 WAS DUE TO NOUN2.
먼저 NOUN1, NOUN2를 정하겠습니다.
여기서 NOUN1 = Nancy's constant fatigue
NOUN2 = an incurable illness she had
>>>>>>
Nancy's constant fatigue was due to an incurable illness she had.
