We will be working on various kinds of debate styles and topics that are relevant today including impromptus.


Debate Course

 

The purpose of this course is to develop an awareness, understanding, and application of debate skills related to relevant topics within speech as well as various forms of debate styles.


Course Description:

This course is designed to enable students to achieve an understanding and application of the

techniques used in formal public speaking within debates including listening skills, speech

preparation and research methods. Activities may involve preparing speeches and debates to

inform, entertain or persuade. Students may learn Lincoln Douglas Debate and parliamentary procedure in Congressional Debate to perform oral Interpretation as well as impromptus.  Students will also learn to recognize common fallacies in speech.


Course Objectives:

1. Develop writing techniques for speech debates.

2. Familiarize students with a theoretical background.

3. Develop critical thinking skills through analysis of issues relating to speech for case issues in

debate.

4. Develop research skills.

5. Determine the strengths and weaknesses of evidence.

6. Develop oral advocacy skills.

7. Develop parliamentary procedure skills.

8. Develop skills for effective oral interpretation of literature.

9. Develop and demonstrate appropriate formal and informal public speaking techniques for

audience purpose and occasion.

10. Develop oral advocacy and refutation skills.
