혹시 내 아이가 'Twice-Exceptional Child'인지 알아볼 수 있는 기준은 다음과 같다.
재능
어려움
두 겹의 'exceptionality'에 관해 각각 정리된 자료를 가져와 본다.
우선, '재능' 쪽이다.
It does not have to be “book smarts,” there are many ways a child can be gifted:
- IQ, GT is often thought of as 130+, 160+ is often considered profoundly gifted.
- Academically – math, science, language arts, etc.
- Artistically – art, music, dance, etc.
- Kinesthetically, Athletically
- Verbal ability
- Visual-spatial
- Problem-solving ability, original, unique ideas
- Abstract thinking, flexible thinking, highly creative, insightful
- Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences: musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, logical-mathematical, linguistic, naturalistic, visual-spatial, bodily/kinesthetic
- Asks unusually deep questions, High-level thinking
- Intuitive or spiritual, “indigo kids”
- Unusually observant in strength areas, learns very quickly in strength areas
- Can communicate in a very mature way (sometimes being incredibly immature at other times)
- Enjoys intellectual challenge
- Advanced sense of humor
- Remembers a lot of details easily
- Crave learning and intellectual stimulation
다음은 '어려움'이다.
Twice-exceptional students also tend to face two or more of the following challenges:
• Frustration
• Argumentative personalities
• Poor written expression
• Sensitivity to criticism
• Poor organizational skills
• Poor study habits
• Stubbornness
• Difficulty in social situations
아이를 키우다보면 '어려움'보다는 '재능'에 집중하기 쉽다.
'단점'보다는 '장점'을 키워주고 싶기 때문일 것이다.
그런데 부모가 더 관심을 가져야 할 부분은 재능이 아니라 어려움일 지도 모른다.
아이의 마음은 재능보다 어려움에서 상처나 아픔을 겪기 쉬우니까 말이다.
재능을 키워주고 계발시켜 그 재능으로 사회에 나가 제 몫을 담당하길 바라는 마음은
부모라면 한결같은 것이다.
준이가 'Twice Exceptional Child'인지 아닌지는 확실치 않으나
준이가 재능도 가졌고 어려움도 가진 건 분명하다.
그런데 이리 생각해 본다.
티피컬 아이라 하더라도 재능을 가졌다고 해서 어려움이 없을까?
아니, 우리 모두는 예외없이 강점과 어려움을 갖고 있다.
나는 준이를 통해, 강점과 어려움을 어떻게 대해야 하는지 배웠다.
강점은 키워주고
어려움은 도와주기
살아오면서 내가 가진 어려움-부족함, 아쉬움, 결핍, 약점 등-을
도외시하고 감추기에 급급했던 것 같다.
내가 가진 어려움은 조심스레 알리고 상의하고 도움을 구해야 했다.
그래서 채우고 교정하고 매만졌더라면 좋았을 것 같다.
어려움은 자랑은 아닐 지 모르나 그렇다고 부끄러움도 아님을
이제야 알 것 같다.
