Sojourner Truth, whose birth name was Isabella Baumfree, was born a slave in 1797 in Esopus, New York. Though nearly all her children were sold as slaves, she escaped to freedom in 1826 with one daughter and lived with a family who paid the money for her freedom. Instead of allowing an unjust system to keep her family apart, she took legal action to regain her small son Peter—an amazing feat for an African American woman in that day. Knowing she couldn’t raise her children without God’s help, she became a believer in Christ and later changed her name to Sojourner Truth to show that her life was built on the foundation of God’s truth.
King Solomon, the writer of Proverbs 14, declares, “The wise woman builds her house” (V. 1). In contrast, one without wisdom “tears hers down.” This building metaphor shows the wisdom God provides to those willing to listen. How does one build a house with wisdom? By saying “only what is helpful for building others up” (EPHESIANS 4:29 SEE ALSO 1 THESSALONIANS 5:11). How does one tear down? Proverbs 14 gives the answer: “A fool’s mouth lashes out with pride” (V. 3).
Sojourner had a “secure fortress” (V. 26) in a turbulent time, thanks to the wisdom of God. You may never have to rescue your children from an injustice. But you can build your house on the same foundation Sojourner did—the wisdom of God.

본래 이름이 이사벨라 바움프리였던 소저너 트루스는 1797년 뉴욕주의 에소퍼스에서 노예로 태어났습니다. 그녀의 자녀들도 대부분 노예로 팔려갔지만, 1826년 자유를 위해 딸 하나를 데리고 탈출하여, 그녀의 자유를 위해 돈을 지불한 어느 가정에서 자유인으로 살았습니다. 그녀는 부당한 제도에 가족이 뿔뿔이 흩어지는 것을 그냥 보고만 있지 않고 법적인 조치를 취해 그의 어린 아들 피터를 찾아왔는데, 이는 그 당시의 흑인 여성으로서는 놀랄만한 성과였습니다. 그녀는 하나님의 도움 없이는 자녀를 키울 수 없다는 사실을 깨닫고 그리스도를 믿는 신자가 되었고, 후에 하나님의 진리의 기초 위에 자신의 삶이 세워졌다는 것을 보여주기 위해 이름을 소저너 트루스로 바꿨습니다.
잠언 14장을 기록한 솔로몬 왕은 “지혜로운 여인은 자기 집을 세우되” 이와 반대로 미련한 여인은 “자기 손으로 그것을 허느니라”라고 말합니다(1절). 집에 대한 이 비유는 경청하려 하는 이들에게 하나님께서 주시는 지혜를 보여줍니다. 어떻게 지혜로 집을 짓습니까? “오직 덕을 세우는 데 소용되는 대로”(에베소서 4:29 데살로니가전서 5:11 참조) 말을 함으로써 가능합니다. 그러면 어떻게 집을 허물어 버립니까? 잠언 14장이 대답해 줍니다. “미련한 자는 교만한 말로 화를 불러 일으킨다”(3절, 현대인의 성경).
하나님이 주신 지혜 덕분에 소저너에게는 격동의 시기에도 “안전한 피난처”(26절)가 있었습니다. 우리에게는 불의로부터 자녀를 구해야 할 일이 전혀 없을지도 모르지만, 우리도 소저너가 사용한 것과 같은 기초 위에, 곧 하나님의 지혜 위에 우리의 집을 지을 수 있습니다. |

2. He whose walk is upright fears the LORD, but he whose ways are devious despises him.
3. A fool's talk brings a rod to his back, but the lips of the wise protect them.
26. He who fears the LORD has a secure fortress, and for his children it will be a refuge.
27. The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, turning a man from the snares of death.
33. Wisdom reposes in the heart of the discerning and even among fools she lets herself be known. |

하나님 아버지, 아버지의 영광을 나타낼 영원한 유산을 남기기 위해 아버지의 지혜가 필요합니다.

2. 정직하게 행하는 자는 여호와를 경외하여도 패역하게 행하는 자는 여호와를 경멸하느니라
3. 미련한 자는 교만하여 입으로 매를 자청하고 지혜로운 자의 입술은 자기를 보전하느니라
26. 여호와를 경외하는 자에게는 견고한 의뢰가 있나니 그 자녀들에게 피난처가 있으리라
27. 여호와를 경외하는 것은 생명의 샘이니 사망의 그물에서 벗어나게 하느니라
33. 지혜는 명철한 자의 마음에 머물거니와 미련한 자의 속에 있는 것은 나타나느니라 |
