¤¤Powell says Fed could keep interest rates at current level if inflation remains elevated By Jeffry Bartash Share Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said the central bank would hold U.S. interest rates at current high levels if inflation doesn't slow much this year.
Inflation rose in January and February faster than the Fed expected, raising questions about whether prices would continue to slow as the same rapid pace as they did at the end of 2023.
"That is a question we honestly are just going to have to let the data tell us that," Powell said in an NPR interview. " There isn¡¯t anybody who knows."
If inflation remains elevated, "then obviously our rate policy would be different," Powell said. "For example, we can hold rates where they are for longer." |
