- Traditional 401k is the type that permits a custom vesting schedule, not to exceed 6 years.
- If you used a 6-year schedule would be 0% in year one, 20% in year 2 and 20% more each year until is 100% in year 6.   
- You can also use the vesting schedule that you mentioned would be 0% in years 1 and 2 and 100% when an employee reaches their 3-year anniversary.
- Matching would take place per pay cycle.  For example, if you were matching 100% up to 6% and an employee saved 6%, then you would match 6% in that pay cycle.
