“소원하기에는 계획하기에 만큼이나 에너지가 들어간다.”

무엇을 바라던간에, 무엇인가를 이루고 싶다면 계획을 짜라는 명언이 많은 것 같습니다.  하지만 이런 말도 있습니다.

“in preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable.” ~dwight d. eisenhower

“전쟁준비에 계획은 소용이 없다는 것을 늘 느끼지만, 계획을 짜는것은 필수적이다.”

많은 실생활의 경우, 그리고 음악연주 또는 다른 예술작품이 만들어 지는 과정에, 또는 전쟁같이 특별난 상황에… 계획없이 벌어지는 상황의 흐름에 따라 행동을 해야할 때가 많죠.   이럴때 사용하는 말로:

“play it by ear” / "wing it"

"what time should we try to get to the train station? we can take any northbound train before 5 o'clock, and it'll take us to boston."

"should we just play it by ear, then? we don't even know if we'll have a ride to the station."

"fine with me."

"기차역에 몇시정도에 가도록 할까? 5시 전에 아무 북행기차나 타면 보스톤으로 우리를 데려가줄꺼야."

"그럼 우리 그냥 상황봐서 갈까? 누가 기차역까지 태워줄수 있을지도 모르는데"

"좋아."

"one of the actors didn't make it to the play on time, and one of the director's friends was forced to play the character instead, but he had never read the script. what was really surprising was that no one noticed that he was just winging it."

"배우중 한명이 연극이 시작하는 시간까지 오지 못해서 할수없이 감독 친구중 한명이 강제로 그 배우의 역을 맏아했어야 했는데, 대본을 읽어본적도 없었데.  정말 놀라웠던 건 아무도 그가 되는데로/즉흥적으로 하고있다는 것을 몰랐다는 거야."
