Never give up. Be the reason someone smiles. You’re amazing. It isn’t where you came from—it’s where you’re going that counts. Some schoolchildren in Virginia Beach, Virginia, found these messages and more written on bananas in their lunchroom. Cafeteria manager Stacey Truman took the time to write the encouraging notes on the fruit, which the kids dubbed “talking bananas.”
This caring outreach reminds me of Barnabas’ heart for the “spiritual youngsters” in the ancient city of Antioch (ACTS 11:22). Barnabas was famous for his ability to inspire people. Known as a good man, full of faith and the Holy Spirit, he prompted the new believers to “remain true to the Lord with all their hearts” (V. 23). I imagine he spent time with those he wanted to help, saying things like: Keep praying. Trust the Lord. Stay close to God when life is hard.
New believers, like children, need loads of encouragement. They’re full of potential. They’re discovering what they’re good at. They may not fully realize what God wants to do in and through them, and often the enemy works overtime to prevent their faith from flourishing.
Those of us who’ve walked with Jesus for a while understand how hard living for Jesus can be. May all of us be able to give and receive encouragement as God’s Spirit guides us and reminds us of spiritual truth.

'절대로 포기하지 마. 누군가를 미소 짓게 하렴. 너는 대단해. 어디서 왔는지 보다 어디로 가고 있는지가 중요해.' 버지니아 주 버지니아비치에 위치한 이 학교 학생들은 학교 식당에서 이런 메시지가 한마디씩 적힌 바나나를 받곤 했습니다. 식당 관리인 스테이시 트루먼이 시간을 내어 과일에 격려 메시지를 쓴 것인데, 아이들은 이것을 “말하는 바나나”라고 불렀습니다.
이런 배려 깊은 봉사는 옛 도시 안디옥의 “영적으로 어린 사람들” 에게 품었던 바나바의 마음을 떠올려줍니다(사도행전 11:22-24). 바나바는 사람들에게 자신감을 부여하는 능력이 있는 사람으로 유명했습니다. 믿음과 성령이 충만한 선한 사람으로 알려져 있던 그는 새로운 신자들에게 “굳건한 마음으로 주와 함께 머물러 있으라”(23절)고 권고했습니다. 나는 그가 돕고 싶은 사람들과 함께 있을 때 이런 말을 하지 않았을까 상상해 봅니다. ‘계속 기도하십시오. 주님을 신뢰하십시오. 삶이 힘들 때 하나님과 가까이하십시오.’ 어린아이처럼, 새로운 신자들에게도 많은 격려가 필요합니다. 그들은 충분히 잘할 수 있습니다. 다만 자기가 무엇을 잘하는지 알지 못할 뿐입니다. 그들은 하나님께서 그들 안에서, 그들을 통해 무엇을 하고자 하시는지 온전히 깨닫지 못할지도 모릅니다. 그리고 대적들이 그들의 믿음이 꽃피지 못하도록 종종 과도하게 작업하기도 합니다.
한동안 예수님과 동행하는 삶을 살아본 사람들은 주님을 위해 사는 것이 얼마나 힘들 수 있는지 잘 이해합니다. 하나님의 영이 우리를 인도하셔서 영적 진리를 생각나게 하실 때, 우리 모두 서로 격려를 주고받을 수 있기를 바랍니다. |

How has God encouraged you in the past? How might God want to work through you to inspire someone?
Heavenly Father, give me someone to encourage today.
Show me what to say and how to meet this person’s needs so that You’ll be glorified.
19. Now those who had been scattered by the persecution in connection with Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, telling the message only to Jews.
20. Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus.
21. The Lord's hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.
22. News of this reached the ears of the church at Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch.
23. When he arrived and saw the evidence of the grace of God, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts.
24. He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.
25. Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul,
26. and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch. |

하늘에 계신 아버지, 오늘 저에게 격려가 필요한 사람을 보내주소서. 제가 무엇을 말하고 어떻게 그 사람의 필요를 채울지를 보여주셔서 하나님께 영광이 되게 하소서.
19. 그 때에 스데반의 일로 일어난 환난으로 말미암아 흩어진 자들이 베니게와 구브로와 안디옥까지 이르러 유대인에게만 말씀을 전하는데
20. 그 중에 구브로와 구레네 몇 사람이 안디옥에 이르러 헬라인에게도 말하여 주 예수를 전파하니
21. 주의 손이 그들과 함께 하시매 수많은 사람들이 믿고 주께 돌아오더라
22. 예루살렘 교회가 이 사람들의 소문을 듣고 바나바를 안디옥까지 보내니
23. 그가 이르러 하나님의 은혜를 보고 기뻐하여 모든 사람에게 굳건한 마음으로 주와 함께 머물러 있으라 권하니
24. 바나바는 착한 사람이요 성령과 믿음이 충만한 사람이라 이에 큰 무리가 주께 더하여지더라
25. 바나바가 사울을 찾으러 다소에 가서
26. 만나매 안디옥에 데리고 와서 둘이 교회에 일 년간 모여 있어 큰 무리를 가르쳤고 제자들이 안디옥에서 비로소 그리스도인이라 일컬음을 받게 되었더라 |
