The memories flooded back when I rustled through some envelopes and glimpsed a sticker that said, “I’ve had an eye test.” In my mind I saw my four-year-old son proudly wearing the sticker after enduring stinging eyedrops. Because of weak eye muscles, he had to wear a patch for hours each day over his strong eye—thereby forcing the weaker eye to develop. He also needed surgery. He met these challenges one by one, looking to us as his parents for comfort and depending on God with childlike faith. Through these challenges he developed resilience.
People who endure trials and suffering are often changed by the experience. But the apostle Paul went further and said to “glory in our sufferings” because through them we develop perseverance. With perseverance comes character and with character, hope (ROMANS 5:3). Paul certainly knew trials—not only shipwrecks but imprisonment for his faith. Yet he wrote to the believers in Rome that “hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit” (V. 5). The apostle recognized that God’s Spirit keeps our hope in Jesus alive when we put our trust in Him.

봉투들을 뒤적이다 “시력검사 완료”라고 쓰인 스티커가 눈에 들어온 순간 지나간 기억들이 되살아났습니다. 네 살 된 아들이 따끔거리는 안약을 참아내고는 그 스티커를 자랑스럽게 붙이고 있던 모습이 마음속에 떠올랐습니다. 약한 눈 근육 때문에 아들은 그 약한 눈이 좋아질 수 있도록 매일 몇 시간 동안 시력이 좋은 눈 위에 조각을 덧대고 있어야 했습니다. 아이는 수술도 필요했습니다. 아이는 부모인 우리를 보면서 위로를 얻으며, 순진한 아이의 믿음으로 하나님께 의지하면서 이 어려움들을 하나하나 이겨냈습니다. 이 어려움들을 통해 아이는 강해졌습니다.
시련과 고통을 견뎌내는 사람들은 종종 그 경험으로 말미암아 변화됩니다. 그러나 바울 사도는 더 나아가 우리는 고난을 통해 인내를 배우기 때문에 “환난 중에 영광”이라고 말했습니다. 그리고 인내는 연단을, 연단은 소망을 이룹니다(로마서 5:3-4). 배가 난파되기도 하고 믿음 때문에 옥에 갇히기도 했던 바울은 시련에 대해 잘 알고 있었습니다. 그는 로마에 있는 신자들에게 “소망이 우리를 부끄럽게 하지 아니함은 우리에게 주신 성령으로 말미암아 하나님의 사랑이 우리 마음에 부은 바 됨이라”(5절)고 편지를 썼습니다. 그는 우리가 하나님을 신뢰할 때 성령께서 예수님 안에 있는 우리의 소망을 지켜 주신다는 것을 알고 있었습니다.
어떤 어려움을 만나더라도 하나님께서 우리에게 그분의 은혜와 자비를 넘치도록 부어 주신다는 사실을 잊지 마십시오. 하나님은 당신을 사랑하십니다. |

How have trials and challenges actually helped you trust God more?
How could you commit yourself to His care in what you currently face?
Ever-loving God, You promise that You’ll never leave me.
Help me to hold on to Your promises even when I’m struggling.
1. Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
2. through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.
3. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance
4. perseverance, character and character, hope.
5. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. |

지금의 상황을 하나님의 돌보심에 어떻게 맡겨드리겠습니까?
저를 절대로 버리지 않을 것이라고 약속하신 영원한 사랑의 하나님.
고난 중에도 하나님의 약속을 붙잡을 수 있도록 도와주소서.
1. 그러므로 우리가 믿음으로 의롭다 하심을 받았으니 우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님과 화평을 누리자
2. 또한 그로 말미암아 우리가 믿음으로 서 있는 이 은혜에 들어감을 얻었으며 하나님의 영광을 바라고 즐거워하느니라
3. 다만 이뿐 아니라 우리가 환난 중에도 즐거워하나니 이는 환난은 인내를,
4. 인내는 연단을, 연단은 소망을 이루는 줄 앎이로다
5. 소망이 우리를 부끄럽게 하지 아니함은 우리에게 주신 성령으로 말미암아 하나님의 사랑이 우리 마음에 부은 바 됨이니 |
