In his essay “Service and the Spectrum,” Professor Daniel Bowman Jr. writes of the difficulty of navigating decisions about how to serve his church as an autistic person. He explains, “Autistic people have to forge a new path forward every single time, a unique path that takes into account... mental, emotional, and physical energy... alone/recharging time sensory inputs and comfort level . . . time of day whether or not we’re being valued for our strengths and accommodated for our needs rather than excluded for perceived deficits and much more.” For many people, Bowman writes, such decisions, “while reorienting people’s time and energy, likely will not undo them. Those same decisions might well undo me.”
Bowman believes that the vision of mutuality Paul describes in 1 Corinthians 12 could be a healing solution. There, in verses 4-6, Paul describes God uniquely gifting each of His people for “the common good” (V. 7). Each is an “indispensable” member of Christ’s body (V. 22). When churches come to understand each person’s unique, God-given wiring and gifting, instead of pressuring every- one to help in the same way, they can support their members to serve in ways that fit their giftings.
In this way, each person can find flourishing and wholeness and be secure in their valued place in Christ’s body (V. 26).

다니엘 보우먼 주니어 교수(35세에 자폐인 판정을 받음: 역자주)는 “봉사와 스펙트럼”이라는 글에서 자폐인으로 교회에서 봉사할 수 있는 일을 결정하는 것의 어려움에 대해 말합니다. 그는 이렇게 설명합니다.
“자폐인들은 매번 새로운 방법을 찾아내야 합니다. 대부분의 사람들과는 달리 정신적, 정서적, 신체적 에너지가 얼마나 필요한지, 그리고 혼자서 재충전할 수 있는 시간이 충분한지를 알아봐야 하고, 감각을 사용해야 하는 정도와 편안한 정도, 그리고 하루 중 어느 시간인지를 파악해야 합니다. 그리고 겉으로 보이는 결함 때문에 배제 당하지 않고 자신의 능력을 인정받으며 자폐인으로 필요한 부분은 지원받을 수 있는지, 그밖에 여러 가지를 고려해야 합니다.” 보우먼은 또 이렇게 하려면 대부분의 사람들은 “자신의 시간과 에너지 사용에 조정이 필요하겠지만 어렵지 않게 해 냅니다. 하지만 이러한 과정이 나에게는 보통 일이 아닙니다.”라고 썼습니다.
보우먼은 바울 사도가 고린도전서 12장에서 설명한 상호의존의 비전이 치유의 해결책일 수 있다고 믿습니다. 바울은 4-6절에서 하나님께서 “유익하게 하려” 하시려고 그의 백성들에게 고유한 은사를 주셨다고 설명합니다(7절). 각 사람은 그리스도의 몸의 “요긴한” 지체입니다(22절). 교회가 하나님이 각 사람에게 주신 고유한 기질과 은사를 이해하면, 모두에게 똑같은 방법으로 도우라고 하기보다 교인들이 자신의 은사에 맞는 방법으로 봉사하도록 지원할 수가 있습니다.
이런 방법으로 각 지체들은 풍요와 온전함을 누리며 그리스도의 몸인 교회 안에서 귀한 사역을 자유롭게 펼쳐 나갈 수 있습니다(26절). |
