Ole Kassow of Copenhagen loved bicycling. One morning, when he saw an elderly man sitting alone with his walker in a park, Ole felt inspired by a simple idea: why not offer elderly
people the joy and freedom of a bike ride. So, one sunny day he stopped at a nursing home with a rented trishaw (a three-wheeled bike) and offered a ride to anyone there. He was delighted when a staff member and an elderly resident became the first riders of Cycling Without Age.
Now, more than twenty years later, Ole’s dream to help those who miss cycling has blessed some 575,000 elderly people with
2.5 million rides. Where? To see a friend, enjoy an ice cream cone, and “feel the wind in their hair.” Participants say they sleep better, eat better, and feel less lonely.
Such a gift brings to life God’s beautiful words to His people in Isaiah 58:10. “Help those in trouble,” He told them. “Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon.” God promised, “The Lord will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restor- ing your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring” (NLT).
God told His people, “Some of you will rebuild the deserted ruins of your cities” (V. 12 NLT). What might He do through us? As He helps us, may we always be ready to help others.

코펜하겐에 사는 올레 카소는 자전거타기를 좋아했습니다. 어느 날 아침 공원에서 한 노인이 보행보조기 옆에 혼자 앉아 있는 것을 보고, 올레는 노인들에게 자전거타기의 즐거움과 자유를 드리면 어떨까 하는 생각이 들었습니다. 그래서 어느 화창한 날, 그는 3륜 자전거 한 대를 빌려 요양원으로 가서 누구든 태워주겠다고 제안했습니다. 한 요양원 직원과 거주하는 노인 한 사람이 ‘연령 제한 없는 사이클링’의 첫 번째 승객이 되자 그는 매우 기뻤습니다. 20년도 더 지난 지금, 사이클링을 원했던 사람들을 돕고자 한 올레의 꿈은 약 57만 5천 명의 노인들에게 2천 5백만 번의 자전거 타는 기쁨을 선사했습니다. 어디로 태워다 주었냐고요? 친구를 만나고, 아이스크림을 먹으며, “바람에 머리카락이 휘날리는” 그런 곳들입니다. 참여했던 사람들은 더 잘 자고, 더 잘 먹고, 덜 외롭다고 말합니다.
그 같은 은사는 하나님이 이사야 58:10-11에서 그의 백성들에게 하신 아름다운 말씀을 살아 숨 쉬게 합니다. 하나님은 “괴로워하는 자의 심정을 만족하게 하면 네 빛이 흑암 중에서 떠올라 네 어둠이 낮과 같이 될 것이라” 고 말씀하시고, “여호와가 너를 항상 인도하여 메마른 곳에서도 네 영혼을 만족하게 하며 너는 물 댄 동산 같겠고 물이 끊어지지 아니하는 샘 같을 것이라”고 약속하셨습니다.
하나님은 그의 백성들에게 “너희 자손들이 오랫동안 폐허가 된 곳을 재건하리라”(12절, 현대인의 성경)고 말씀하셨습니다. 하나님은 우리를 통해 무엇을 하실 수 있을까요? 하나님께서 우리를 도와주시듯, 우리도 항상 다른 사람들을 도울 준비가 되어 있기를 바랍니다.
