| [ Colossians 3:22 - 4:1 ] - hymn 331 Masters, treat your servants considerately. Be fair with them. Don’t forget for a minute that you, too, serve a Master—God in heaven.

Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower announced in 2022 that all migrant domestic workers must be given at least one rest day a month that employers couldn’t compensate them for instead of giving them the day off. Employers, however, were concerned they wouldn’t have someone to care for their loved ones on those days. While the logistics of caregiving could be solved by making alternative arrangements, their attitude in not seeing the need for rest wasn’t as easy to solve.
Treating others considerately isn’t a new issue. The apostle Paul lived in a time where servants were seen as the property of their masters. Yet, in the last line of his instructions to the church on how Christlike households should operate, he says that masters are to treat their servants “justly” (COLOSSIANS 4:1 ESV). Another translation says, “Be fair with them” (THE MESSAGE).
Just as Paul tells the servants to work “for the Lord, not for human masters” (3:23), he reminds the masters also of Jesus’ author- ity over them: “you also have a Master in heaven” (4:1). His purpose was to encourage the Colossian believers to live as those whose ultimate authority is Christ. In our interaction with others— whether as an employer, employee, in our homes or communities—we can ask God to help us do what’s “right and fair” (V. 1).

싱가포르 노동부는 2022년에 고용주들이 모든 외국인 가사 도우미들에게 매달 의무적으로 하루의 휴일을 주도록 지정하고, 이 의무 휴무를 대체하기 위해 다른 식으로 보상하는 것을 금지시켰습니다. 그러나 고용주들은 그 휴일 동안 그들의 사랑하는 사람들이 간병을 받지 못하게 될까 우려했습니다. 간병인의 문제는 다른 대안을 만듦으로써 해결할 수 있었지만, 휴식의 필요성을 알지 못하는 고용주들의 태도를 바꾸는 일은 쉽지 않았습니다. 다른 사람을 배려하는 일은 전부터 있어온 문제입니다. 바울 사도는 종들이 주인의 소유물로 여겨지던 시대에 살았습니다. 그러나 가정들이 어떻게 그리스도를 닮은 모습으로 운용되어야 하는지에 대해 교회에 주는 지침의 마지막에서, 바울은 주인은 그들의 종들에게 “공평”(골로새서 4:1)을 베풀라고 말합니다. 다른 번역에는 “그들을 공정하게 대하라”(메시지성경)고 되어 있습니다.
바울이 종들에게 무슨 일을 하든지 “주께 하듯 하고 사람에게 하듯 하지 말라”(3:23)고 한 것처럼, 상전들에게도 “너희에게도 하늘에 상전이 계심을 알지어다”(4:1)라고 하면서 예수님의 권위가 그들 위에 있음을 상기시켜 주고 있습니다. 바울이 이렇게 말한 목적은 골로새의 신자들이 궁극적인 권위를 가진 이는 그리스도시라는 것을 알고 살도록 권면하기 위함이었습니다. 우리가 가정이나 사회에서 다른 사람들을 대할 때, 그 사람이 고용주이든 고용인이든 “의롭고 공평하게” 대하도록 도와달라고 하나님께 간구할 수 있습니다(1절). |
