[ ROMANS 12:11 ]
The first time we met our neighbor Henry, he pulled a well- worn Bible out of a bag he’d been carrying. Eyes sparkling, he asked if we’d like to discuss Scripture. We nodded, and he flipped to some highlighted passages. He showed us a notebook full of his observations and said he’d also created a computer presentation full of other related information.
Henry went on to tell us how he’d come from a difficult family situation and then, alone and at his worst, he accepted Jesus’ death and resurrection as the foundation of his faith (ACTS 4:12). His life had changed as the Spirit helped him follow the Bible’s principles. Although Henry had committed his life to God years ago, his enthusiasm was fresh and powerful.
Henry’s zeal inspired me—someone who’d walked with Jesus many years—to consider my spiritual passion. The apostle Paul wrote: “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord” (ROMANS 12:11). That seems like a tall order, unless I’m allowing Scripture to nurture the kind of attitudes that reflect an ongoing thankfulness for all that Jesus has done for me.
Unlike the emotional highs and lows we experience in life, zeal for Christ comes from an ever-expanding relationship with Him. The more we learn about Him, the more precious He becomes and the more His goodness floods our souls and spills out into the world. 이웃인 헨리를 처음 만났을 때 그는 들고 다니던 가방에서 낡은 성경책을 꺼내어, 눈을 반짝이며 우리에게 성경에 대해 이야기해도 괜찮겠냐고 물었습니다. 우리가 고개를 끄덕이자 그는 성경을 펼쳐 형광펜으로 표시된 구절들을 보여주었습니다. 그리고 자신이 관찰한 내용을 빼곡히 적은 공책을 보여주면서, 다른 관련된 정보로 가득 찬 컴퓨터 프리젠테이션도 만들었다고 했습니다.
헨리는 계속해서 자신이 어떻게 어려운 가정 환경에서 자라났으며, 홀로 되어 최악의 상황에서 어떻게 예수님의 죽음과 부활을 그의 믿음의 토대로 받아들였는지 이야기했습니다(사도행전 4:12). 성령께서 그가 성경의 원칙들을 따라 살 수 있도록 도와주심으로 그의 삶이 변화되었습니다. 헨리는 오래 전에 자신의 삶을 하나님께 바쳤지만, 그의 열정은 여전히 신선하고 강력했습니다. 헨리의 열정은 오래 동안 예수님과 동행했다고 여겼던 나의 영적인 열정을 되돌아보게 했습니다. 바울 사도는 “부지런하여 게으르지 말고 열심을 품고 주를 섬기라”(로마서 12:11)고 썼습니다. 성경말씀으로 예수님이 나를 위해 행하신 모든 일에 대해 계속 감사하는 모습을 키우지 않는다면 그것은 달성하기 어려운 명령처럼 보입니다.
우리가 인생에서 경험하는 감정의 기복과는 달리, 그리스도를 향한 열정은 주님과의 관계가 계속 확장될 때 가능합니다. 우리가 주님에 대해 더 많이 알수록 주님은 더 소중한 분이 되고 더 많은 주의 선하심이 우리의 영혼에 넘쳐 세상으로 흘러 나가게 됩니다. |

9. Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil cling to what is good.
10. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.
11. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.
12. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.
13. Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
14. Bless those who persecute you bless and do not curse.
15. Rejoice with those who rejoice mourn with those who mourn.
16. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. |

14. ○너희를 박해하는 자를 축복하라 축복하고 저주하지 말라
15. 즐거워하는 자들과 함께 즐거워하고 우는 자들과 함께 울라
16. 서로 마음을 같이하며 높은 데 마음을 두지 말고 도리어 낮은 데 처하며 스스로 지혜 있는 체 하지 말라 |
