어젯밤 랄라가 학교 숙제로 자신의 인생관에 대한 작문을 했는데, 아래층에 있던 나에게 프린트 좀 도와달라고 부탁을 했다. 한 장씩 인쇄되어 나오는 랄라의 글을 읽다가 마지막 단락에서 눈물이 났다. 

랄라의 인생관이 대견하고 기특해서 가슴이 뭉클했다. 그리고 '이렇게 잘 커준다면, 앞으로도 랄라가 건강히 행복하게 잘 살아가겠구나' 하는 생각에 마음이 편안해지면서 아이에게 고마운 마음이 들었다. 더 나아가 랄라의 육아일기는 여기서 마무리하기로 결심했다. '육아'라는 단어를 사용하기에 우리 랄라는 이미 훌쩍 커 벼렸고, 한 생각 돌이켜보니 내가 남긴 모든 랄라의 흔적은 '성장'의 기록이었음을 깊이 깨달았기 때문이다.

그 순간 법정 스님께서 "어머니는 저절로 되지 않습니다. 여성에서 시작해서 아이를 낳고 키우면서 어머니가 됩니다. 그리고 자식들은 우리의 선지식입니다. 왜냐면 그들로부터 우리가 배우고 성숙해지기 때문입니다."라고 하셨던 말씀이 되살아났다. 

열한 살 랄라는 이렇게 매일매일 나에게 소중한 가르침을 주고 있다.

"Without my family, friends, activities, hobbies, and my past, I wouldn’t be who I am today. I’m special in my own way thanks to my personality and what I think of myself. A lot of people get worried about what other people think about them but not me. I care about what I think of myself, not others. My friends say that I’m brave, unique, and outgoing like that. I guess I am. Up to now, my life has been like a mountain, and you can’t make a mountain without ups and downs, can you? Just like my life, there are ups and downs. See the resemblance? Along as I go, I’ll create more mountains, and one day it’ll just create one massive landmark. So when I get old and die, I’ll look back and be proud and happy."
